As former journalists ourselves, we know what a privilege it is to have some of the most knowledgeable legal journalists in the country right here in our own backyard.

The pandemic continues to upend the daily life of the legal industry, but one constant is that visibility for law firms in the local media is essential in building a firm’s credibility with the local legal community. After all, that is where most lateral recruits and referral business come from.

This year, there has been some personnel movement in the Chicago legal media community. With the departure of long time Crain’s Chicago Business law and manufacturing reporter Claire Bushey to the Financial Times, Steven Strahler has stepped in with legal industry coverage for Crain’s.

Additionally, the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin has continued its exceptional reporting of Chicago law firms. Since its inception in 1854, the Law Bulletin is still viewed as the credible, go-to source by attorneys and PR professionals alike. Its annual “40 Under Forty” list has grown into a local institution, and a spot on the list is a feather in the cap of Chicago attorneys.

The Law Bulletin offers in-depth coverage of how the federal courts impact local companies, and also has its finger on the pulse of important diversity and inclusion issues in the legal industry.

And, the publication continues to be a proving ground for legal reporters. Dave Thomas recently moved from ALM to Reuters. Meanwhile, Roy Strom, who started his career at the Law Bulletin and moved on to ALM, continues to do great work at Bloomberg. And Lauraann Wood moved from the Law Bulletin to her current post at Law 360.

Wherever Law Bulletin alumni go, their national coverage will be informed by the connections they made when they were local Chicago legal reporters. And we get to say, “we knew them way back when!”
