Throwing a Fun (Seriously) Virtual Holiday Party

Eight months ago I doubt any of us were considering what we might do if the traditional office holiday party had to be taken online. Well, thanks to the (still) ongoing pandemic, here we are. I’m sure that many of us are burnt out on Zoom calls by now — So. Many. Webinars. — but believe it or not, it is possible to throw a fun holiday party from the comfort of your own home that your entire office will enjoy. Here are some of our favorite ideas:

Dinner Party. Support a local business by having meals delivered to everyone from your favorite restaurant. Be considerate of any allergies or preferences by giving everyone their own budget — let them choose their own meal and have it delivered right to their door.

Cooking Class. Learn to make a new dish by signing the group up for a virtual cooking class. Life at the Table has live, virtual classes for about $20/person.

Bingo Game Night. A personal favorite — send out bingo cards with a fun theme (think Luau, Wild West or Heroes vs. Villains). Don’t forget to include the whole family for this one!

Trivia Night. Put on your thinking caps and sign up for an online trivia night. Eventbrite has dozens of options for upcoming trivia nights, most of which hand out prizes to the winner.

Virtual Wine or Cocktail Party. Organize an experience with a local mixologist, restaurant or sommelier. Many events can be organized where bottles of wine, supplies, etc. are sent out to participants in advance.

Virtual Fundraiser. Pick your favorite nonprofit and host a virtual fundraiser. All proceeds will benefit your organization of choice!

Whatever you decide to do this holiday season, remember to be considerate of everyone’s individual circumstances. While it would be great to get every single person involved and on board, not everyone will feel up to the virtual office party — and that’s OK. Do your best to host an interactive experience and use it as a chance to boost morale during these stressful and unpredictable times.
